One Weekend, Three Shops: Portland Thrift Guide
I loathe the rain, which is ironic considering I grew up in Portland, Oregon. Since much of the year consists of frigid temperatures and the desire to be inside, I needed an escape. Lucky for me, I found it in thrift locations all over Portland. The first time I perused the isles, I found the rain left my mind and was replaced by beaded totes and frilly lampshades. If you ever find yourself in Portland on a rainy weekend and in need of an escape or a new bag, you'll thank me.

Antique Alley: A Hidden Gem (2000 NE 42nd Ave, Portland)
Sporting black and white checkered floors, Antique Alley is home to 95 vendors. Although 95 may seem daunting, the jazz music and friendly staff make the experience comfortable and engaging. Lately, I have been keener on home decor, rather than clothes. Antique Alley is just the place for that. With curated booths, I found unique hand-glazed vases, wooden mannequin figurines, and antique masquerade masks with intricate beadwork.

Hollywood Vintage: Experience an Alternate Reality (2757 Northeast Pacific Street, Portland)
Located in a three-story building, the rosy pink exterior and racks of psychedelic costumes on the front stoop invited me in. Once inside, hundreds of vintage costumes, t-shirts, jeans and skirts hung from the ceiling at various lengths. Immediately, I knew this was one of my new favorite thrift locations. The clothes here are true vintage, so they are higher in price, ranging from $30-$150.

Goodwill Bins: Eyes on the Prize (5950 NE 122nd Ave, Portland)
Although farther away, the Goodwill Bins are worth the trip. Dozens of 9x4 foot bins carry anything you can imagine. From dirty socks, to trendy cargo pants, I’ve seen it all. But be warned, the Bins are not for the faint of heart. As long as you go in with a positive attitude and ample time, you are guaranteed to find some gems. 90% of my wardrobe is from the Bins and I get compliments all the time!
The rain doesn't bother me anymore. I have learned to welcome the downpour and its beauty. Thrifting helped me reach this maturity. Every object I find tells a unique story and has made me more appreciative— even of the rain. So the next time you trying to appreciate Portland and it's raining, give thrifting a try. It may broaden your view.
